by Ana Clara Monaco

On her 13th birthday, Carmen Leon’s date and time of death appeared on her right wrist—as is common in the Corporate States of America. That day, she learned that, unlike most in her society who live to be at least 60, Carmen has only 2 years left to live.

Ever since that birthday, Carmen has been preparing for her death—arranging her funeral, writing her will, going through the motions. But when the dreaded date arrives, Carmen doesn’t die. Her heart continues to beat. The breath of life flows through her uninterrupted. It should be a joyous occasion . . . but is it?

When the plot of the story takes an unexpected turn, what seems at first like something to celebrate soon becomes a serious problem. What will happen to Carmen and her family? Can she keep her life a secret? Will she have to hide from the C.S.A. forever?
